ABC Teachers is recruiting a Behaviour Mentor to work 1:1, full-time with secondary-aged students in a Specialist SEMH school. This is not a classroom assistant role — this is a frontline, relationship-based position where consistency, presence, and mental toughness matter.

About the role

  • 1:1 Behaviour & Emotional Support
Working intensively with one student to support emotional regulation, behaviour management, and engagement with learning.

  • De-escalation & Emotional Coaching
Helping students manage anger, frustration, and anxiety using calm authority and clear boundaries.

  • Behaviour Tracking & Pattern Recognition
Identifying triggers, flashpoints, and warning signs to reduce incidents and improve outcomes.

  • Consistency & Presence
Being the reliable, grounded adult who shows up every day — no rotation, no distractions.

  • Building Confidence & Independence
Celebrating progress (even the small wins) and helping students develop self-belief and self-control.

This role can be challenging, intense, and emotionally demanding — but it is also one of the most rewarding roles in education.

About the school

  • Specialist SEMH provision for students aged 9 to post-16

  • Focused on structure, routine, and positive relationships

  • Strong emphasis on individual strengths, discipline, and personal development

  • Clear behaviour systems and experienced leadership team

  • A setting where firm but fair adults thrive

Requirements

To be considered for the role of Behaviour Mentor in SEMH School you will:
  • Significant experience supporting children or young people with SEMH or challenging behaviour
  • The ability to work full-time, 1:1 only
  • Resilience, emotional strength, and consistency
  • A genuine commitment to helping young people turn things around
  • A DBS (or willingness to obtain one) and suitable references
Salary is dependent on experience, training or qualifications. The minimum experience, training or qualifications required for this position are:
  • 2 years experience in a relevant role such as youth outreach, social work, mentoring, crime or violence prevention, or mental health support
ABC Teachers is committed to safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults. We take our responsibilities extremely seriously. All staff we register will undertake thorough interviewing and referencing checks and hold, or be prepared to undergo, an Enhanced DBS check that must be registered on the Update Service.
