ABC Teachers are seeking a skilled and dedicated Teaching Assistant (sport background) to work within an SEN school in Birmingham, part of the Think Differently Education Trust (who we are proud to be working with as a Managed Service Partner)

About the role

  • Support students with a passion for sports and physical activity, using their interests as a tool to engage them in the wider curriculum and foster a love for learning.
  • Work 1:1 or in small groups to provide academic support across subjects (particularly English and Maths), adapting tasks to suit individual learning styles and needs.
  • Build positive relationships with students with autism and/or Social, Emotional & Mental Health (SEMH) needs, using coaching-style communication and a calm, consistent approach.
  • Help integrate physical activity and movement breaks into the school day to support emotional regulation, focus and behaviour management.
  • Act as a role model and mentor, encouraging positive attitudes, resilience, and healthy lifestyles, while also tracking and supporting students' academic progress.

About the school

The school, part of the Think Differently Education Trust, provides specialist education for pupils with Autism Spectrum Conditions. The school supports learners who may face complex social, emotional and learning challenges, offering a personalised and nurturing environment where high expectations are combined with strong pastoral care.

At this school, class sizes are small and bespoke learning pathways enable staff to tailor a broad and balanced curriculum to individual needs. Alongside academic progress, the school prioritises wellbeing, independence and social development, working closely with families and professionals to ensure every young person is supported to build confidence and achieve positive outcomes for their future.

Requirements

To be considered for the role of Teaching Assistant (Sport Background) you will:
  • Have previous experience working with children and young people with a range of special educational needs, such as learning difficulties, autism, and sensory needs.
  • Suitable qualifications such as Youth Work, Health and Social Care or Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools are desired but not essential.
  • Have strong communications skills with the ability to quickly build rapport with students.
  • Able to obtain suitable references and a DBS check.
Salary is dependent on experience, training or qualifications. The minimum experience, training or qualifications required for this position are:
  • At least two years of experience supporting people with special educational needs.
ABC Teachers is committed to safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults. We take our responsibilities extremely seriously. All staff we register will undertake thorough interviewing and referencing checks and hold, or be prepared to undergo, an Enhanced DBS check that must be registered on the Update Service.
