Teaching Assistant Career Information
Working as a Teaching Assistant
Teaching assistants play an essential part in todays education system with approximately 250,000 TAs working in UK schools and this number only expected to increase over time.
Teaching Assistants help the class teachers carry out the lessons plans they have created and contribute to learning objectives in the classroom. The role can vary a lot in regards from school to school, class to class and from day to day.
TA's may be asked to work with small groups or individuals with more targeted assistance to allow them to progress quickly, sometimes a teaching assistant may be asked to take the whole class (although in theory this should only be HLTAs). Other duties may include hall and lunch time supervision and assisting with the preparation of the classroom.
In special needs schools TA's may be asked to assist with the physical needs of pupils. Sometime a TA may have particular language skills to assist pupils where English is not their native tongue.
